{"id":5768,"date":"2019-12-16T11:03:03","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T10:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tsastre.com\/your-retainers-how-to-care-for-them\/"},"modified":"2025-02-12T14:48:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:48:00","slug":"your-retainers-how-to-care-for-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tsastre.com\/en\/your-retainers-how-to-care-for-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Your retainers: how to care for them"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>How are retainers cared for?<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong> fixed retainers<\/strong> hardly need any care:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The only precaution you should take is to make sure that<strong> they do not become detached from the tooth<\/strong> and to maintain proper hygiene, taking care that <strong>tartar does not accumulate<\/strong> between the teeth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The orthodontist will check at each check-up that it is well cemented or bonded and that there is no tartar build-up, since the gum can become inflamed, leading to the appearance of gingivitis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You should also be careful when <strong>biting into certain foods<\/strong>, e.g. a snack, as you have to be careful when biting and with the &#8220;leverage effect&#8221; when bringing the snack forward, as, in that case, it can come unstuck.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not bite your nails,<\/strong> this habit can lead to tooth movement and the lingual retainer becoming detached. <strong>removable retainers<\/strong> or orthodontic splints do require a series of care that we will detail below:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cleaning of the splints:<\/strong> removable retainers should be washed every time they are removed, at least <strong>once a day<\/strong>, since they are in continuous contact with saliva and tartar. Because of this, they can get a <strong>bad odor,<\/strong> hence the importance of cleaning them daily. They are usually brushed with a <strong>toothbrush<\/strong> (not the same one you use to brush your teeth),<strong> cold water and neutral hand soap<\/strong>(do not clean them with toothpaste, as they become white instead of transparent). In addition, you can use <strong>prosthesis tablets<\/strong> as a cleaning complement, which will eliminate the particles that produce bad odor, as well as the most resistant bacteria that remain in it.<\/li>\n<li><b>Remove it<\/b><b> when eating:<\/b> it is important to remove it when you eat, as the retainer can become an accumulation of bacteria and lose its esthetic properties of transparency.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9898 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/albayhernanz.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RETIRAR-ESSIX-300x150.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/albayhernanz.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RETIRAR-ESSIX-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/albayhernanz.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RETIRAR-ESSIX-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/albayhernanz.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RETIRAR-ESSIX-370x185.jpg 370w, https:\/\/albayhernanz.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RETIRAR-ESSIX-760x380.jpg 760w, https:\/\/albayhernanz.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/RETIRAR-ESSIX.jpg 900w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\"><\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep them in a box<\/strong> as long as they are out of the mouth.
