AFTER CHRISTMAS, PREVENT CAVITIES IN YOUR CHILD

After Christmas, prevent tooth decay in your child.

The holidays are often accompanied by sweets, desserts and treats that, while delicious, can leave their mark on children’s oral health. Therefore, the beginning of the year is a perfect opportunity to reinforce good nutrition and dental care habits. One of the first actions is to reduce sugar consumption, the main culprit of tooth decay. Instead of offering sweets or sugary drinks, we can opt for healthier alternatives such as fresh fruits or natural yogurts. Drinks also play an important role: water and milk (without chocolate!) are much better options than commercial juices, which are often loaded with sugars. In addition, the diet should include foods that strengthen teeth. Products rich in calcium, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, are excellent allies, as are those that provide vitamin D and phosphorus, such as fish and eggs. These nutrients help to keep teeth and gums in good condition. Another key aspect is regularity in eating schedules. Establishing eating routines not only improves overall health, but also reduces constant snacking, a practice that increases the risk of tooth decay. It is important to avoid foods before bedtime, especially if they are sweet or sticky, as they can remain on the teeth throughout the night. Of course, a good diet should go hand in hand with proper oral hygiene. Brushing teeth after every meal with fluoride toothpaste is essential, as is teaching older children to floss. Regular visits to the dentist are essential, as an early checkup can prevent major problems. Finally, education is essential. Explaining to children, in a simple and age-appropriate way, the risks of tooth decay and the importance of taking care of their teeth can be very effective. It is also useful to motivate them with non-food rewards, such as small recognitions or fun activities, to reinforce these good habits. With these steps, it is possible to transform the excesses of the holidays into an opportunity to improve the oral and general health of the little ones, ensuring a healthier start to the new year.
